How Long Does a Kitchen Installation Take? What to Expect at Every Stage

One of the most common questions we hear from customers considering a new kitchen is: how long is this actually going to take? It is a completely understandable concern. Your kitchen is one of the most used rooms in your home, and the prospect of being without it for any length of time can feel daunting.

The good news is that with the right planning and a clear process, a kitchen installation is far less disruptive than most people expect. At Fineline Interiors, we manage the entire process from initial consultation through to the finishing touches, and we will always give you a clear timeline before any work begins. Here is a straightforward breakdown of what to expect at every stage.

Stage 1: The Design Consultation (Weeks 1 to 2)

The process begins with a free, no-obligation home consultation. One of our expert designers will visit you at home to discuss your requirements, understand how you use your current kitchen, and take all the measurements needed. This visit is relaxed and informal, there is no pressure, and there are no decisions to make on the day.

Following the visit, your designer will produce a series of detailed 3D designs back at our studio. You will then be invited to our Oldham or Warrington showroom to review the designs, explore door and finish samples, and refine the plan until it is exactly right.

Stage 2: Finalising Your Design and Ordering (Weeks 2 to 4)

Once you are happy with the design, we will finalise all the details, cabinet specifications, worktop material, handles, appliances, and any additional works required. A survey is then carried out to confirm all measurements before your order is placed.

Because all of our furniture is manufactured on our own premises in Oldham, lead times are more predictable than with many other kitchen companies. Your cabinetry is made to order and to your exact specifications, with a 15-year cabinet guarantee included as standard.

Stage 3: Preparation and Building Works (Weeks 6 to 10)

Depending on the scope of your project, some preparatory work may be needed before the new kitchen goes in. This can include:

  • Removal of the existing kitchen, which typically takes place a few days before installation begins

  • Repositioning or removal of walls, doors, or windows

  • New plumbing and electrical first fix

  • Plastering and floor preparation

  • Installation of underfloor heating if required

Our recommended fitters are experienced across all of these trades, meaning you have one consistent team managing the project rather than coordinating multiple contractors yourself. A member of the Fineline team is available throughout to answer any questions.

Stage 4: The Kitchen Installation (Days 5 to 10 On Site)

The installation of the kitchen itself typically takes between five and ten working days, depending on the size of the kitchen and the complexity of the design. During this time your fitters will:

  • Install all cabinetry and wall units

  • Fit the worktops, upstands, and splashbacks

  • Complete the plumbing second fix, including sink and appliance connections

  • Complete the electrical second fix, including sockets, switches, and lighting

  • Fit and commission appliances

  • Install any flooring if included in the project

We recommend setting up a temporary kitchen area in another room during this period, with a kettle, microwave, and easy access to a sink. It is a short-term inconvenience for a long-term transformation.

Stage 5: Finishing Touches and Snagging (Final 1 to 2 Days)

Once the main installation is complete, a snagging visit takes place to address any minor adjustments — door alignments, final seal lines, and any small finishing details. This is a normal and expected part of any quality installation, and our team takes it seriously. From that point, your new kitchen is ready to use and enjoy.

So What Is the Total Timeline?

From your first consultation to the day your new kitchen is complete, the typical timeline is between 8 and 16 weeks, depending on the complexity of the project and any lead time on specific appliances or materials. Your designer will give you a clear estimated timeline at the point of ordering.

If you are working to a specific deadline — a house move, a family event, or a particular time of year, let us know from the outset and we will do our best to plan around it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kitchen Installation Timelines

How long does a kitchen installation take from start to finish?
A typical kitchen installation takes between 5 and 10 working days on site. The full process from initial consultation to completed installation is usually between 8 and 16 weeks.

Can I use my kitchen during the installation?
During the installation period your kitchen will be out of use. We recommend setting up a temporary kitchen area in another room with a kettle, microwave, and access to a sink. Our team works as efficiently as possible to minimise disruption.

Do Fineline Interiors remove the old kitchen?
Yes. Removal of your existing kitchen is included in the process. This typically takes place up to a week before installation begins, and we take care to minimise dust and debris throughout.

What building work might be needed as part of a kitchen installation?
Common additional works include removal or repositioning of walls, doors, or windows; new electrics and plumbing; tiling; plastering; and installation of underfloor heating. Our recommended fitters can manage all of this as part of a fully project-managed service.

How do I start the process with Fineline Interiors?
The process begins with a free no-obligation home consultation. One of our designers will visit you at home, take measurements, and produce a 3D design for you to review at our Oldham or Warrington showroom.
